1. Remove the AlcoCheck tube from the box, which contains 1 tube, 1 bag, a set of instructions and a consent form.

  2. Complete the consent form included in the pack (up to the results section).

  3. Bend the ends of the tube (preferably against a flat surface) one after another until you hear a click from each end.

  4. The AlcoCheck tube is now ready for use.

  5. Insert the AlcoCheck tube by rotating the tapered end into the opening of the flattened measuring bag. The printed arrow should point towards the bag.

  6. Ask the donor to take a deep breath and blow evenly through the Alco-Cheek tube, filling the bag completely without pausing to inhale again, this should take 8-15 seconds.

  7. The yellow crystals within the Alco-Check tube turn green if alcohol is detected.

  8. If a green discolouration is seen at 2 minutes, the breath alcohol level exceeds 30mg/dl or 0.03% blood alcohol concentration. If the green discolouration reaches, or goes beyond, the indicator line at 2 minutes, then blood alcohol levels are at or over the UK legal drink driving limit (80mg/dl or 0.08% blood alcohol concentration).

  9. A lack of any green discolouration of the yellow crystals within the tube indicates the absence of any alcohol.
