Cross reacting Opiates are a commonly faced issue when conducting both on-site and laboratory drug screening.  When carrying out a drug test for Opiates / Morphine you should obtain a list of any recently taken medication because Opiates is the one class of drug where there are relatively common over-the-counter and prescription Opiates which may cross react and give a positive result.  Consequently, an Opiate positive screening test doesn't always mean Heroin use until a full laboratory confirmation confirms it.

Opiate drug screening techniques in general, whether in the laboratory or using rapid test kits, detect Morphine, which is one of the common metabolites produced by taking either Heroin or over-the-counter / prescription Opiates.

The following Opiate-based drugs will produce a positive result on an Opiate drug test.

Codeine • Dihydrocodeine • Heroin • Morphine • Opium

There are many over-the-counter and prescription-only medicines that may contain these compounds or derivatives of them. Some of the more common medications available are listed in the table below (this list is not exhaustive):
